Bernstein continues to improve: After qualifying No. 4 with a solid 4.550, then reeling off times of 4.566 and 4.586 before going up in smoke against David Baca in the semi's, Brandon Bernstein's Budweiser King entry once again displayed the consistent performance that has made it one of the more respected Top Fuel entries. "We moved up two spots [from ninth to seventh] in the standings, and we're just 49 points out of fourth, so it was a pretty good weekend for the team," said Bernstein. Crew chief Tim Richards said, "We were shooting for a mid-4.5-second run in the semi's because that's what we figured we'd need to win this thing. The track didn't like our tune-up that time, but it did on the previous passes, so we know we're close to where we want to be."

Tough loss for 'Shoe': Tony Schu-macher's semifinal showdown against points leader Doug Kalitta was viewed by many as the marquee match of the event, and the two contestants didn't disappoint. Kalitta nipped Schumacher in a side-by-side nail-biter, 4.532 to 4.549. But despite giving spectators their money's worth, crew chief Alan Johnson was disappointed by the loss. "It's huge when you race the points leader because of the 40-point swing that is based on the outcome. We were aiming at something between a 4.50 and a 4.52, but we just didn't make enough power with our tune-up for that run. It was a good show for the fans but not for us because they're leading in points and we're not."

Lucas grabs first pole with new car: Morgan Lucas didn't win the event, but he was still in awe of team owner Joe Amato's new Hadman-built dragster, which crew chief Wayne Dupuy tuned to a 4.541 best for the No. 1 qualifying spot, Lucas' first career pole. "This car was awesome right out of the box and really showed a lot of promise," said Lucas. "There's always a learning curve with any new car, but I don't think we'll have a very long one with this. We were a little bit down on our 60- and 330-foot times on Sunday [which resulted in a 4.602 to 4.628 second-round loss to eventual runner-up David Baca], but at least we know that we have a good car. A lot of races are coming up in the next few weeks, so we'll certainly have opportunities to show what this thing can do."

Dxon's optimism boosted: Though he has yet to regain the form that brought him NHRA POWERade Top Fuel world championships in 2002 and 2003, Larry Dixon is very pleased with the recent progress of Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite entry. "Even though our numbers aren't overpowering yet, we're still qualifying well and have gone enough rounds to put ourselves in third place," said Dixon. "We're very close to where we should be to start visiting the winner's circle on a more consistent basis, like we've done before." Following the team's narrow 4.524 to 4.585 loss to Tony Schumacher in the second round after qualifying No. 6 with a 4.567, crew chief Dick LaHaie said, "We had aimed for a 4.53 or a 4.54, but it didn't happen. This has always been a tough track to tune for. It takes every ounce of your train of thought to put together four good runs at this place on Sunday."

Starcher misses field in return: Josh Starcher made his first appearance of the 2005 season behind the wheel of Rhonda Hartman-Smith's dragster, and his 5.043 best fell short of Bobby Lagana Jr.'s 4.923 bump time. Said team owner and crew chief Virgil Hartman, "We did this as a favor to Josh to give him the runs to keep his license active. We want to thank Torco Race Gear for helping us out this weekend as an associate sponsor. We're working on some deals that will hopefully enable us to return to a two-car-team format next year when Rhonda returns. In addition to getting the extra data, it's also easier to amortize the racing expenses." Helping out during Starcher's return was 16-year-old Trish Wilson, who was in charge of the clutch program. Said Hartman, "She worked with John [Smith] in Bristol, and she really showed us a lot. She appears to be mechanically inclined, and she'd love to be the next Kim Richards."

Funny Car Scelzi's fiery dilemma: The engine in Gary Scelzi's Mopar/Oakley Stratus blew in round one, and Scelzi was coasting downtrack on fire, yet he hesitated to get the car stopped because he knew he was still ahead of Richard Hartman, who smoked the tires on the starting line. "I didn't want to hit the fire bottles because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to see, and I would have hated to cross the centerline or hit the wall," said Scelzi. "I also waited a while to grab the brake because I was ahead. It got pretty warm in there. How dumb am I? I held on for the win, and that's all that matters." Scelzi's crew may have been the only people happy to see the two-hour rain delay after round one because it gave them extra time to repair the car.

Team CSK struggling: Heading into the final qualifying session, Checker Schuck's Kragen drivers Del Worsham and Phil Burkart Jr. were qualified second and third, respectively, and were anticipating a long day on Sunday. Things changed quickly as each driver failed to improve on his final qualifying run. On race day, Worsham smoked the tires against Cruz Pedregon; Burkart followed closely behind with another tire-smoking loss, this one to Eric Medlen. "It rattled a little about 150 feet out, then it cleared up and I thought I was home free," said Burkart. "Then it knocked the tires loose and that was that. I went from being so happy and confident on Friday night to wondering what other hurdles they were going to throw our way Sunday." The losses left both CSK drivers out of the top 10 for the first time in recent memory. "I know Del is frustrated, and so are [we]," Burkart said. "Right now, we just can't seem to get it right. I've seen a lot of teams disintegrate under stress like this, but this team is just getting tighter. We are going to overcome this."
