I was never interested in the dad.

William Ligue Jr., the father in the father-son team that leaped the wall at Comiskey Park in September and attacked Kansas City Royals first-base coach Tom Gamboa, had made a decision that was stunning in its fury, suddenness, incongruity and horror.

But he had made the deranged decision himself, as an adult. Beer- wasted, drug-addled, grief-stricken--it didn't matter. There is a responsibility that comes with being an adult in society.

Losers like Ligue populate our prisons the way flies populate our dumps.

No, it was the son who fascinated me.

Just 15, the boy had vaulted the stadium wall with his dad, and both of them--bare-chested, tattooed and raging to a private beat-- had viciously struck the unsuspecting Gamboa as if he were a dog stealing camp food in the night.

The boy had a nearly shaved head, a snarl on his lips, and cameras broadcast his fleeting image nationwide, until it was learned he was a minor. In replays since, his face has been obscured, as the law and fairness require.

If William Ligue Jr. was simply a man out of control, what was the boy?

We have found from court proceedings that in the past, Dad had burned his son with cigarettes, made him fight other kids to show his toughness and used that evolutionary blood bond of deference and paternal worship to make the son ignore issues of right and wrong.

Are you a pussy? Do you have balls?" Ligue Jr. allegedly asked his boy before the attack. Are you my son? Would you do anything for me?"

Study a photo of the two, freeze-framed in mid-attack, and two questions arise: When does free will begin? Can a savage also be a victim?

Here is the son now on this Thursday morning, entering Courtroom No. 2 at the Cook County Juvenile Center.

His black hair is longer but still close-cropped. His face is pale, childlike, with a hint of an as-yet-un-erupted mustache.

He is wearing a light blue shirt, blue tie, khaki pants and brown shoes. Accompanied by mother, grandmother and a shaved-headed uncle, he is narrow-shouldered, slight and looks as dangerous as a washcloth.

Dad is a few blocks away, safely behind bars, a guest of the state," as Cook County Public Defender Christopher Swanson puts it.

The boy looks harmless. This sentencing for admitted aggravated battery and mob action seems ludicrous.

But who knows? Left undeterred, he and Pop just might have killed the defenseless Gamboa, who still has headaches and hearing loss from the beating.

You do not have any prior offenses," Judge Paul Stralka says as the timid youth stands before him. You have the potential to become a productive citizen."

The small, ceiling-tiled room is so bland--three spectator benches, cream-colored walls, their blank vistas broken only by an American flag on the left and a Chicago flag on the right, an incongruous pumpkin on the judge's high desk--that the proceeding seems mundane.

But it is not.

The judge squashes one rumored excuse for the attack: The 54-year- old Gamboa did nothing by words or action to provoke it."

The kid already has agreed to this.

Yet because of Gamboa's kind heart, the judge is going easy on the boy, who already has spent 31 days in juvenile detention.

Mr. Gamboa is and has been a teacher and mentor to young men just a few years older than you," Stralka says. He said he did not want to see a young man's life thrown down the drain by a tragic mistake."

The sentence: five years' probation, 30 hours of community service, counseling, anti-gang education, no drugs or alcohol and stay away from Dad.

Stralka mentions the sadness that the boy did not have a protective father," and then he brings up the old rock 'n' roll song, the one with the refrain that William Ligue Jr. spat upon: Teach your children well."

The judge looks at the boy, who has claimed he wants to be an architect, who is a reasonably good student with decent grades, who has participated in extracurricular activities at his high school.

This is the kid's break. He could have been given serious jail time, been treated as an adult.

Instead, he has been handled gently. The stain of his father is just too dark to ignore.

Will the youngster learn? Or is he already headed down the wrong path, and is this humble posturing but a ruse?

Any questions right now?" the judge asks.

No, sir," comes the quiet voice.

Good luck to you."

It is over, and the family scurries away.

Outside on the sidewalk, Swanson admits, It's going to be real tough for him. This kid has a very tough road ahead of him."

Family and leadership and allegiance and manhood issues will dog him like imps.

As co-defending attorney Vincent Akers puts it, His dad, no matter what, is not going to be locked up forever."

Think of this upside-down world where that is a bad thing.

Maybe the kid is on the road to recovery and doing just fine.

Suddenly a car honks its horn at the group of media interviewing the boy's defense team.

A person in the front seat yells out loudly and defiantly through the open window at the group. It is the boy's family in the car.
