AT LAST the truth is out.
For as long as most of us can remember, advertisers have been analysing the needs and desires of the young Western male, sending out a million researchers with a million clipboards to build a profile of the end-product of 2,000 years of civilisation - the most affluent, most secure, most pampered and, in theory, most civilised generation that has appeared on planet Earth.
And now, with a simple click of a mouse, bringing up the 100 sites most commonly searched on the Internet, we have a more transparent window into their minds than ever before, since these are the quests they make in the privacy of their own homes, sharing secrets only with the computer terminal.
It has been created at www.searchterms.com, which has tracked down more than a million enquiries to one of the leading search engines. Sadly, as the long-awaited profile assembles itself, we do not see the lineaments of budding Lincolns and Einsteins, thirsting for knowledge so that they can better themselves. What we see, actually, is Beavis and Butthead.
What does today's list of top 100 Internet sites tell us about the desires of young men?
The Top 100 list confirms what most people have suspected, that Internet users are predominantly young, male and American, although Europe is rapidly catching up. The first 10 searches mirror their preoccupations. MP3, which in the last few months has overtaken sex to take top place, is the system for downloading and storing music over the Internet.
But after this, music and song lyrics take only another four places in the top 70, with the groups Backstreet Boys and Limp Bizkit on 58 and 66 respectively.
Hotmail, the free email service, comes third, and Yahoo, the most comprehensive of all the search engines, is fourth. In fifth place, demonstrating its phenomenal popularity, comes Pokemon, a children's game with freaky little creatures who can be collected as cards or played on computer. The seventh commonest search is for chat - the chat rooms where people across the world can meet on the Internet and participate in group discussions some of them erudite and fascinating, although the average level can be surmised from the fact that the top dedicated chat site on the list is for fans of Super Nintendo.
Jokes come eighth, and in 10th place, shooting up the list, is ebay, the top Internet auction site which sells everything from books and records to Old Masters and, at one point, a baby. But at second, sixth and ninth place come sex, warez (underground and pirated sex sites) and the babe of the moment, Britney Spears. The teen singer, who reappears as a search object at number 84 (britney spears nude),is thus enthroned as the most lusted-after woman in the Western world, replacing Pamela Anderson, who appears in 11th place (simply as "pamela" for those thousands of her admirers who cannot spell, or have forgotten, her surname) and again at 38.
Of the top 50 most searched sites, 20 are sex- or pornography- related - some with names too obscene to be printed. Typical of the milder kind is ampland, which opens on the photograph of a naked girl above the message "Come and join us!

It is not, so far as I can tell, connected to the search for "bestiality", 17 places down. The bookbuyers' site amazon.com appears way down the list. Far above it are two searches for the Blair Witch Project.
So what can advertisers, teachers and, I suppose, parents take away from this Internet list?
The average young Anglo-American male is almost certainly a reader of Playboy, FHM or Loaded, with posters of Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Lopez on his walls. He plays computer games and rock music (hollering the words with the help of www.lyrics.com), and his thoughts turn to holidays in exotic places when not focused on downloaded pictures of naked bimbos in pornographic poses.
So I take it all back. There's nothing new here; we knew it already. But I shall never think of alpaca in quite the same light.
